That news was prior to the tranfer of the game from Westwood to HP. Look at the screenshots for the current interface -- there is indeed now only one full 3D figure active ON the interface, with portraits to flip through (the selected portrait should then change the selected 3D character)
AFAIK, the multiplayer is in the game and will remain in the game.
