It's all open-ended, ASFAIK. It's not a "rail-game" where once you're on the track, you can't get off. Create a chracter during the middle of the game (he'll probably get disembowed on those harder levels, but hey, cannon fodder is cannon fodder), Make a party of 1 or 3 or anything up to 6 players.
I don't know about having NPC's join your party, though. But, I do like that idea. Sorta gives the player the power needed to take down the enemies without all the micro-management.
