Character switching

I read in one of the preview articles (don't remember which one) that you can go into town and change your second character (how about your first?) any time you want, so if you have a quest where you need a thief, you go into town and get one for that quest. My question about this is two-part: 1) Will the character that you drop off retain the equipment you've gotten for him/her during the layoff, so that when you are ready to come pick him/her back up again, they will be still outfitted? and 2) Will the characters that you pick up in the taverns, whereever, be aproximately the same level you are, so that if you are a 20th level fighter (and no, I don't know how level development will proceed) and you pick up a mage, will he/she be around that same level, or level 1? And one bonus question! How will experience point sharing work out? Will exp points be split evenly between your characters, or will whoever killed the most baddies get the exp pts?
